Raised by Cameronian grandparents, S. R. Crockett's early life on a tenanted farm influenced his later writings. After winning a bursary to Edinburgh University, he began a journalistic career while studying for the ministry. Although he left university without graduating, he traveled across Europe as a tutor before becoming a minister in 1886. His personal life included marrying Ruth Mary Milner in 1887, intertwining his experiences with his literary pursuits.
