Teddy Ottinger, a lesbian pilot and part-time journalist, becomes the personal pilot of Kelly, a former G.I. from New Orleans who is an expert in chemical and biological warfare from his time in Vietnam. Together with some followers, he declares himself the reincarnation of the Hindu god Kalki and becomes the leader of a religious cult that gains worldwide followers. However, Kelly/Kalki has a deeper goal: he wants to annihilate all of humanity and repopulate the world with his descendants. This is a dark, inventive, and gripping novel about religion and culture, and somewhat a companion story to Messiah, though not quite as original or compelling.
