Rex Stout was one of the most successful American crime writers of the 20th century. His literary creation, the private detective Nero Wolfe, remains one of the most famous figures in the genre. Along with his assistant Archie Goodwin, the investigator, who has a passion for orchid cultivation and gourmet cuisine, has captivated millions of readers worldwide. In this story, the wealthy eccentric Rachel Bruner is fed up with the American intelligence service. She buys ten thousand copies of a tell-all book and distributes it nationwide, attracting unwanted attention from the FBI, which begins to monitor her closely. In her desperation, the distinguished lady turns to Nero Wolfe, New York's most famous private investigator. However, her adversary is none other than J. Edgar Hoover. A check for $100,000 convinces Wolfe to at least give it a try. Just then, a murder case involving a journalist presents itself, providing Wolfe with a perfect opportunity to assist her.
