Set in 1953 Los Angeles, the story follows British journalist John Russell, who enjoys a comfortable life with his wife, Effi, and their adopted daughter, Rosa. As he investigates American companies' ties to Nazi Germany, he becomes aware of being followed, raising suspicions about his past as a double-agent. When Effi is invited to a film festival in Berlin, they decide to attend, confronting the political turmoil of a city they once knew and the dangerous repercussions of Russell's previous dealings in the shadow of Stalin's death.
