The novel is set during World War II and follows the main character, Cletus Frade, a commander of a U.S. Navy fighter squadron, who is assigned a special mission after the Battle of Guadalcanal. His task is to disrupt an illegal arms trade between the Nazis and neutral Argentina. The mission becomes unexpectedly complicated when he recognizes a prominent officer in the Argentine army, loyal to Nazi Germany, as his own father.
