Thea Sternheim, a captivating figure of the 20th century, is renowned through her five-volume diary edition, regarded as significant testimonies of the past century. Her diaries reveal a woman with a tumultuous life, whose personality and relationships with prominent literary and artistic figures across Germany, France, Belgium, and Switzerland are equally compelling. She keenly observes political, literary, and artistic developments, candidly documenting family tragedies and her struggle for independence. Throughout, she emerges as a woman determined to confront reality. This richly illustrated volume accompanies an exhibition in Switzerland and Germany, offering a multifaceted portrait of Sternheim. An extensive chronicle, filled with quotes, images, and commentary, traces the diarist's life. Notably, 32 duotone pages provide a deeper look into Sternheim's impressive photographic work, featuring portraits of Carl Sternheim, Mopsa Sternheim, André Gide, Julien Green, René Crevel, Ernst Stadler, Annette Kolb, and others. The exhibition runs from September 18 to November 28, 2015, at the University Library Basel, with additional displays at the German Exile Archive in Frankfurt, the Literature House in Berlin, and the Bodmanhaus in Gottlieben. Contributions include insights from Regula Wyss, Thomas Ehrsam, Marion Beckers, Elisabeth Moortgat, and Dorothea Zwirner, exploring Sternheim's literary and artistic legacy.
