Outstanding researchers from the US and Japan review recent advancements in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) research. Most individuals harbor EBV in memory B-cells in a latent state, and this virus is linked to various malignancies, including T/NK cell lymphoma, AIDS-associated B-cell lymphoma, gastric carcinoma, and Hodgkin's disease. Advances in molecular biology techniques have enabled the investigation of specific EBV genes involved in maintaining and disrupting latency.
