Enrique Martínez Celaya’s paintings, sculptures, photographs, and poetry show his consistent interest in the grey area between experience and its representation, as well as the relationship between fragmentation and wholeness. He has examined the nature of the art objects he presents, as well as the possibilities of visual media and the limitations – perhaps inadequacy – of representation itself. In his installations, using objects and words of profound beauty and elegance, he has explored notions of symbolism, hermeticism, displacement, fragmentation, time, remembrance, morality and identity. This book includes essays and interviews from distinguished curators and art historians, and provides an opportunity for a deeper examination and understanding of a highly regarded artist.

This book brings together a selection of paintings and sculptures by internationally renowned artist Enrique Martínez Celaya from 2005 to the present. Since his installation Schneebett at the Berlin Philharmonie in 2004, his work has changed formally, but it has remained intellectually and emotionally challenging. Born in Cuba and now living in Los Angeles, Martínez Celaya combines art with philosophy, literature, and science. Published to accompany the exhibition at the USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles, this book conveys Martínez Celaya?s work as an artistic, poetic, and intellectual mapping of an existential landscape that the artist traverses.
