Die Marler Medienkunst-Preise vereinen zwei herausragende Wettbewerbe: Den EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD und den ebenfalls international ausgeschriebenen Marler Videokunst-Preis. Dabei trifft seit über 15 Jahren Klang- auf Videokunst, der Ton auf das bewegte Bild. Im Zweijahres- Rhythmus werden die besten Einreichungen prämiert. Preisträger des Jahres 2018 sind in der Kategorie Video Hedda Schattanik & Roman Szczesny und im Bereich Klang Kathrin Stumreich. 22 Arbeiten herausragender Künstler beziehensich thematisch, formal oder in der Präsentation auf den umgebenden Raum und bieten einen exzellenten Querschnitt durch die zeitgenössische Medienkunst. Der Katalog dokumentiert sowohl den Raumeindruck, den beide Künste im Zusammenspiel vermitteln, bietet aber auch Eindrücke der einzelnen Werke für sich. The Marl Media Art Awards unite two outstanding international competitions: the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD and the Marl Video Art Award. For over fifteen years, Marl has served as a platform where sound meets moving images. The 2018 awardees in the category Video Art are Hedda Schattanik and Roman Szczesny, while it is Kathrin Stumreich in the category Sound Art. The outstanding works of altogether twenty-two artists offer an excellent cross-section of contemporary media art.

The works of Diango Hernández (b. Sancti Sp'ritus, Cuba, 1970; lives and works in Düsseldorf) examine his own experiences and personal relationships, which the artist embeds in larger social and political reflections. A central theme of Hernández’s artistic quest are his reflections on the traumatic and often unaccomplished transitions of Cuban the painful legacy of slavery, the contradictions of decolonization and the Castro revolution, the search for a new "possible future" after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the mid-1990s, when he was still living in Havana, Hernández has been interested in materials from everyday life. The installation "Lonely Fingers" (2011) is accordingly not just a white wall covered with guitar strings, but rather a sounding box, and indeed a musical instrument. Diango Hernández’s art has been presented at the Venice (2005), São Paulo, Sydney (2006), and Liverpool (2010) biennials, among other exhibitions, and is included in the collections of major institutions such as the MoMA, New York.

Zum elften Male wählte 2007 eine Jury aus über 600 internationalen Beiträgen 48 Positionen aus, die dieser Band vorstellt und kommentiert. Damit bildet die Publikation einen unverzichtbaren Überblick zum Stand der Medienkunst heute.
