Pierre de Frédy, baron de Coubertin, fut un pédagogue et historien français, fondateur du Comité International Olympique, et est considéré comme le père des Jeux Olympiques modernes. Issu d'une famille aristocratique française, il devint universitaire et étudia un large éventail de sujets, notamment l'éducation et l'histoire. Son influence s'étend bien au-delà du domaine sportif, laissant une marque indélébile sur la compréhension internationale et la diplomatie pacifique par le sport. Il croyait en la puissance du sport pour forger le caractère et encourager la coopération mondiale.

Pierre de Coubertin věnoval nejlepší léta svého života vybudování obnovených olympijských her. Třicet let byl předsedou Mezinárodního olympijského výboru a bylo to v Praze, na Olympijském kongresu roku 1925, kde se vzdal předsednické funkce. Jeho paměti přináší tato publikace. Od založení novověkých olympijských her uplynulo přes osmdesát let. Ze skromných začátků závratně vzrostly a dnes svou velkolepostí uchvacují svět. Jejich význam přesahuje rámec mezinárodních sportovních soutěží. Vyvolávají zájem o sport ve všech pěti kontinentech, stávají se účinným prostředkem v šíření tělesné kultury, vedou mládež k čestnému soutěžení, k uznávání rovnoprávnosti soupeře, k odmítání diskriminace, ke vzájemné úctě. „Sportem k míru“ se stalo heslem olympijských her.
