In this special issue, a number of internationally renowned scientist present an overview of our current knowledge on antibiotic resistance in staphylococci. A discussion of the molecular mechanisms of multiple resistance is followed by a summary of results from European multicentre studies about its frequency. Further contributions consider the molecualr bilogy of methicillin resistance, and the possible future problems of vancomycin and teicoplanin reisitance. Clinical aspects covered include antimicrobial therapy of multiresistant staphylococcal infections, the role of coagulase-negative staphylococci as disease-causing agents in hospitalized patients, and the involvement of small colony variants in persistent and resistant infections. Finally, the prevention and control of multiresistant nosocomial infections are discussed. Compiling the latest data on the challenging isue of multiresistance, this publication is recommended reading for microbiologists, infectious diseases specialists, molecular bilogists, epidemiologists and pharmacists.
