In Montana, a Senator is being pushed out, requiring a special election that kicks off a fierce battle for the vacant seat and an unexpected candidate quickly outruns his competitors. A strange business man in Azerbaijan shows an interest in the Montana Senate race while fiercely protecting his secret global business interests in Europe and Asia from detection. Die Ermittler um Hauptkommissar Heinrich „Henry“ Ammann finden einen Tatort vor, der viele Fragen aufwirft, da der tödliche Schuss nicht nur aus sehr großer Entfernung, sondern auch aus einem großkalibrigen Scharfschützengewehr abgefeuert wurde. Die friedliche Bergwelt von Nidwalden in der Schweiz wird durch einen gewaltsamen Tod an einem Wanderführer erschüttert. Die Ermittlungen der zuständigen Kommissarin bleiben nach einer vergeblichen Suche nach Motiv und Täter erfolglos und der Fall wird nach einiger Zeit fast schon zu den Akten gelegt. In Vorarlberg wird kurze Zeit später bei Höbranz eine Frau in ihrem Haus tot aufgefunden. Die Polizei in Bregenz und der ermittelnden Kommissarin finden zunächst keine Erklärung für ihren gewaltsamen Tod. Erst langsam ergeben sich Hinweise darauf, wie die Todesfälle im Dreiländereck von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz am Bodensee zusammenhängen könnten. Die über die drei Landesgrenzen hinweg kooperierenden Ermittler setzen alles daran, um weitere Morde zu verhindern und den oder die Täter ausfindig zu machen.
