Der junge Sebastian, ein Ungleicher unter Gleichen in der DDR, schreibt an seine Familie, zunächst während seines Wehrdienstes bei der NVA und später aus einem nahen und doch so fernem Land. Er lernte den „real existierenden Sozialismus“, ein Begriff, den die DDR selbst prägte, von Grund auf kennen. Das Leben in der DDR wird aus verschiedenen Perspektiven aus dem eigenen Erleben heraus betrachtet, kommentiert und reflektiert, ebenso später das Leben in der BRD und die damit verbundenen Freiheiten, Möglichkeiten und Probleme. Diese Briefe sind nicht nur ein unverfälschtes Zeitzeugnis voller Humor, Poesie und Weisheit, sie sind auch von erstaunlicher Aktualität, wenn es zum Beispiel um Betrachtungen des ehemaligen DDR-Bürgers zur Wirtschaft und zur Flüchtlingsproblematik geht. „Das Flüchtlingsproblem wird kaum politisch oder gar menschlich gesehen, sondern am ehesten persönlich.
