One hundred years ago, Dada artist Marcel Duchamp forever changed the nature of art by anonymously submitting Fountain in 1917, a porcelain urinal signed "R. Mutt" as an art work to the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, New York. The show organizers' rejection of Fountain ignited a controversy that persists to today about the definition of art and who gets to pass judgement. NSU Art Museum marks this centenary by organizing S ome Aesthetic Decisions , a show of artworks by Cory Arcangel, John Baldessari, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Sophie Calle, Duchamp, Judy Fiskin, Claire Fontaine, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Joseph Kosuth, Jorge Pardo, Andy Warhol et al, examining issues of beauty, value and judgement. The title of the book, and of the exhibition, is derived from Judy Fiskin's photography series Some Aesthetic Decisions (1973 to 1995).

In 1912, Alfred C. Barnes, later of the Barnes Foundation, sent his friend William J. Glackens (1870–1938) to Paris to purchase the works of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919). Subsequently, he had access to all of the new European modern art that Barnes' collection acquired including Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Examining the similarities and differences in Glackens' late style and Renoir's work, how Glackens' style grew out of those early experiences with the avant-garde and shedding new light on the history of taste in American collecting from the late-19th to the mid-20th century, William J. Glackens and Pierre-Auguste Affinities and Distinctions brings together over 30 works from these two artists for the first time in an art history book.

A selection of new works by the celebrated New York artist (and filmmaker, and designer) Julian Schnabel, surrounded by unusually riveting texts by art world luminaries Bonnie Clearwater, Fudi Ruchs and Georg Baselitz. The paintings, prints and sculptural works gathered here are large and expressionistic, expansive, searching and fearless. They are like the artist, according to this catalogue's foreword, "heroic yet human; innovative yet timeless absent of cynicism masquerading as irony." The central paintings are of a figure named Chuck, a surfer type who helped design and build Schnabel's studio complex in Montauk, Long Island. Angelic, perhaps homoerotic, slightly unfinished, they definitely stake out new terrain for this quintessential, and deserving, New York art star.
