Die vorliegende Monographie beschäftigt sich mit der Therapie von Eisenüberladungserkrankungen. Eisen ist ein wichtiges essentielles Spurenelement mit vielen Funktionen im Stoffwechsel, kann aber als Schwermetall auch toxisch wirken. Eisenmangel und Eisenüberladung sind weltweit sehr häufige Krankheiten, die medizinisch und sozioökonomisch große Bedeutung haben. Schwerpunkt sind hierbei die sekundären Formen (z. B. bei Thalassämien, Sichelzellanämie u. a.), die infolge häufiger Bluttransfusionen entstehen und bei denen eine fortschreitende Eisenüberladung schwere Organschäden hervorrufen kann. Hier gilt es, in der medizinischen Betreuung die Eisenüberladung mit neuen diagnostischen Methoden zu erkennen und mit einer individuell angepassten effektiven Eisenentzugstherapie frühzeitig zu behandeln. Therapeutische Möglichkeiten bei diesen Krankheiten werden aufgezeigt, wobei den neuen oralen Eisenchelatoren breiter Raum eingeräumt wird.
