Abbildungen, zeitgenössische Texte und Akten berichten von der Geschichte dieses kolossalen und restlos verschwundenen Denkmals des Hindenburg-Mythos im Ersten Weltkrieg. Zwölf Meter hoch, aus Holz geschnitzt, sollten ihm die der Wohltätigkeit gewidmeten Nägel ein eisernes Kleid und damit Dauerhaftigkeit verleihen. Zunächst im Zentrum des Interesses und Ausdruck der Spendenfreudigkeit, wurde es zuletzt Zeuge grundsätzlicher politischer Veränderungen und ging unter, wie das System, das den Krieg heraufbeschworen hatte.
