August Šenoa, considéré comme le père du roman croate, fut une figure de transition qui guida la littérature croate du romantisme au réalisme. Il fusionna magistralement le romantisme national avec la représentation réaliste de la petite bourgeoisie naissante. Šenoa était célèbre pour ses scènes grandioses et cinématographiques et ses descriptions lyriques de la paysannerie opprimée et de la noblesse luttant contre la domination étrangère, idéalisant souvent la période du XVe au XVIIIe siècle. Par son style accessible et captivant, on lui attribue la création du public de lecteurs croates.
