Alfred Brendel - internationally famous as the supreme interpreter of the piano music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt - is also a poet. Le procès intenté à Joseph K., qui ne connaîtra pas ses juges, ne relève d'aucun code et ne pouvait s'achever ni sur un acquittement ni sur une damnation, puisque Joseph K. n'était coupable que d'exister. Crime capital et à la fin du livre, deux « messieurs » l'emmèneront dans une carrière abandonnée et le tueront « comme un chien ».
