Mort de dama, va ser escrita el 1921 i publicada al cap de deu anys. Villalonga hi descriu el seu món, un món que com la majestuosa dona Obdúlia, la protagonista del llibre, agonitza lentament i dramàtica. Així, a través d'una sèrie de personatges inoblidables, hi són tipificats i alhora caricaturats diversos estaments representatius d'aquesta vida mallorquina en vies d'extinció, mentre s'anuncia l'arribada «d'uns altres temps i una altra gent, probablement pitjors».

Hrdinka románu — dona Obdúlia pochádza zo slávneho rodu Montcadovcov a je na to veľmi hrdá. Má 84 rokov, umiera, ale ani v týchto vážnych chvíľach sa nevzdáva svojich zásad a spôsobov. Je impulzívna a ignoruje etiku. Okolo jej postele sa tisnú príbuzní, ktorí čakajú na dedičstvo. Dona Obdúlia, vzor cnosti a ochrankyňa mravov, umierajúc najradšej spomína na svoje úspechy u mužov, takže je čitateľovi jasné, že to bolí cnosť iba z núdze. Svoj protest voči okolitému svetu najlepšie zvýrazní svojím testamentom. Román sa ponáša na starý portrét z aristokratického salónu. Autor humorne a súčasne vysoko umelecky načrtol boj dvoch svetov - starého, miznúceho, s novým, nadchádzajúcim.
