Selections from Gabriel Orozco's sketches, photographs, and texts that offer a rare look inside his art-making process. Written Matter presents selections from the notebooks of the prolific and celebrated artist Gabriel Orozco. These texts, sketches, and images from notebooks spanning 1992 to 2012 offer insights into Orozco's artmaking process, revealing his thinking, methods, and rationales. The texts, translated from the original handwritten Spanish, offer personal truisms, compelling insights, observations, and notes on process and method, forming a subterranean stream that runs parallel to his artwork. “Art is the opposite of spectacle,” he writes. “Art does not try to convince anyone, that's why it's shocking.” The notebooks are fundamental to Orozco's work, serving as a travelogue and personal dictionary that, when consulted, allow him to resume the trajectory of his thought anywhere. Because Orozco chooses not to work in a studio, his notebooks act as a different kind of studio space, on paper and bound between covers. Orozco works in a variety of media—drawing, installation, photography, sculpture, video. His notebooks reveal and revel in the style and substance of his art. Profusely illustrated and designed under Orozco's art direction, Written Matter offers an unusually intimate look at an artist's process and practice.

This most elaborate artist book by Gabriel Orozco examines all possible permutations within a self-defined spatial and color system based on the 'Knight's move' (or as the artist expresses the 'Samurai's move') within a game of chess. In each, a circle is drawn in the centre, and moving out from this point, a sequence of increased or decreased circles is drawn, until the limits of the square is reached. Gabriel Orozco has done a series of 672 digital prints due to these rules, 50 x 50 cm each, calculating all the possible movements and variations. He spells them out by extending them in space. By these simple visual means and rules the artist achieves an almost incomprehensible compexity. This book shows all the 672 resulting images - in White, Red, Blue and Gold. Gabriel Orozco designed the cover as a new artwork referring to the series of prints - by silk-screen printing the colors become three-dimensional and bright contrasting with an unusual softness and plasticity. Gabriel Orozco first launched his “The Samurai Tree” series at the Venice Biennale in 2005.

In 2017, the artist installed an OXXO store inside the gallery space at kurimanzutto, and with it proposed a game involving opposing logos and rules of the market, as two ways of understanding the ever-expanding capitalist world in demise. OROXXO was divided into two spaces that performed differently, the store and the back room. In the store, products normally found at an OXXO where exhibited along with a total of 300 items intervened by the artist. The back store displayed the packaging of the intervened products that were installed following a traditional exhibition criteria, functioning within the game set forth by the artist on rules of the market.
