Peter Ratcliffe se v roce 1970 stal příslušníkem 1. praporu výsadkového pluku. V roce 1972 si podal žádost do SAS. Tam pak působil 25 let a se svým plukem se podílel na operacích v Ománu, Severním Irsku, na Falklandech, na Středním východě i v Británii. Byly mu uděleny medaile za vedení mobilní hlídky SAS za nepřátelskými liniemi v Iráku během války v Zálivu v roce 1991.
