Sokrates (470 – 399 pred n. l.) patrí k najlegendárnejším a zároveň najenigmatickejším postavám západnej filozofie. Pokiaľ vieme na základe svedectiev jeho súčasníkov, sám nič nenapísal, ale preslávil sa rozhovormi, ktoré viedol so svojimi aténskymi spoluobčanmi priamo tam, kde ich stretol. Diskutoval s nimi na každodenné témy a chcel vedieť ich názor na všeobecné, fundamentálne pojmy, ktoré sa za týmito témami skrývajú, ako napríklad „čo je odvaha?“, „čo je cnosť?“, „čo je spravodlivosť?“ atď. Takýto filozofický spôsob života sa mu napokon stal osudným: v dôsledku svojho dobrého a racionálneho úmyslu rozvíjať u druhých poznanie a starostlivosť o dušu bol obvinený a odsúdený na smrť. Sokrates vo svojej obhajobe na súde obvinenie vyvrátil, no odsúdenie prijal, aby dokázal pravdivosť svojho etického učenia, ktorým najviac prispel do filozofie. Jadrom tohto učenia je poctivé skúmanie samého seba a konanie v súlade s poznanou pravdou.
