The planet was called Pyrrus...a strange place where all the beasts, plants and natural elements were designed for one specific purpose: to destroy man. The settlers there were supermen...twice as strong as ordinary men and with milli-second reflexes. They had to be. For their business was murder... It was up to Jason dinAlt, interplanetary gambler, to discover why Pyrrus had become so hostile during man's brief habitation...
When dinosaurs ruled the Earth... In this brilliant, acclaimed novel they still do. The cosmic catastrophe that ended the Age of the Dinosaurs 65 million years ago in the world we know never happened. The evolution of the great reptiles continued, climaxing with the Yilanè, the most intelligent and advanced race on Earth. But when the onset of a new Ice Age forces them to cross the ocean to explore and colonize a vast, strange continent, they clash violently with a savage breed of mammal that walk erect, hunt and use crude stone tools - and weapons... West of Eden is Harry Harrison's greatest feat of imaginative story-telling . This epic tale of the titanic clash of two vastly different cultures sweeps the read along on a hurricane-force ride of total excitement. Full of wonder, an incredible novel... Tony Hawkin wasn't really made for the FBI. He rarely hit what he aimed at, forgot his own code name, and had a tendency to panic at the slightest hint of trouble. Now he's gotten himself handcuffed to an attache case with two million dollars inside, and stuffed aboard a hijacked DC-10, bound for Scotland, where he's being chased through the countryside by the hijackers, Scots patriots, a crazy Cuban colonel and half the police force. All of them want only two things--the money and Tony's head in a noose. Once again Special Agent Tony Hawkin must rely on his own brand of expertise to outwit and confound a nefarious array of foes. Tony's plan is simple: lead them all back to London, like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and deposit them at the gates of Scotland Yard. There is just one small problem; London is five hundred miles away, and Tony has no idea which way that is... This collection features the first three adventures of DiGriz, a master criminal turned reluctant hero. In the first story, he is caught during a heist and recruited into the Special Corps, where mundane desk work leads him to uncover a secret battleship project. As he investigates, he finds himself in a personal conflict with the alluring Angelina, who is plotting a coup on a feudal world. Torn between duty and love, DiGriz must decide whether to betray her or join forces.
In the second tale, DiGriz and Angelina are married and expecting twins while the planet Cliaand wages war across the stars. Tasked with undermining the planet's tyrannical leader, Kraj, DiGriz embarks on a guerrilla campaign, aided by the Amazons, a group of freedom fighters. Angelina's arrival adds both support and tension as she helps him navigate the chaos of war.
The final story sees a villain traveling back in time to alter history and eliminate DiGriz's allies, including Angelina. Armed with a time-travel device, DiGriz ventures to 1984 America and Napoleonic France, where he must thwart the villain's plans and protect the timeline. Each adventure showcases DiGriz's wit, charm, and resourcefulness in a universe filled with danger and intrigue.
This is a classic science fiction novel by Harry Harrison and a follow up to his hugely successful Deathworld. This sequel continues the story of professional gambler Jason dinAlt on a harsh world of primitive violence. The planet's ailing technology is jealously guarded by a series of brotherhoods and to survive, dinAlt has to use all his cunning to get the better of them. This work is part of our Vintage Sci-Fi Classics Series, a series in which we are republishing some of the best stories in the genre by some of its most acclaimed authors, such as Isaac Asimov, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert Sheckley. Each publication is complete with a short introduction to the history of science fiction.
The Decade anthologies present the eighty-year history of science fiction in the most relevant way - by collecting the stories which have gone to make it up. Each volume, complete in itself, takes from a single decade the tales which are best, not only as history, but as entertainment.
What if Homo Sapiens was just a rather special breed of galactic wild rabbit? Or a high class form of goldfish- Homo-Piscis? What if he were spiritually inferior to a resurrected version of Neanderthal Man-who can even beat him at American football? Apeman, Spaceman is a collection of anthropological SF stories which all pose the question: what is man's place in the universe? To someone, somewhere, we are inferior, perhaps even unnoticeable, and yet here we are teaching dolphins cheap tricks. But one day ...
In this adventure, seasoned former galactic thief Jim diGriz, now aligned with law and justice alongside his new wife, the former assassin Angelina, faces an almost impossible task as a member of the Corps. He must disrupt the winning streak of the expansionist planet Cliaand, which is rapidly conquering more worlds and expanding its empire.
Beginning with The Five Keys of raising a daughter or son, this book
accompanies Dad on the journey from his child's infancy straight through the
toddler and teenage years and into college.
In "Deathworld 3," our hero Jason dinAlt has uncovered the secret of the warlike planet of the Pyrrans, with its aggressive flora and fauna. However, his plans to transform Pyrrus into a peaceful world are doomed to fail due to the presence of thousands of belligerent Pyrrans, who cannot overcome their intense aversion to the native life. Jason devises a plan to take these unruly fighters to a new, harsh planet where they might have a better chance of survival and building a civilization. This new world, Prosperity, is even more savage than the Pyrrans, presenting its own challenges. Midway through the cunning campaign to tame the backward nomads of Prosperity, the Pyrrans abruptly return to their old planet upon receiving distress signals. Upon arrival, they find Pyrrus reduced to a smoking ruin. Back on Prosperity, Jason, who had remained behind, ultimately wins the battle through cleverness, but he finds himself trapped in a steel demon cage high above the marble town square.

865 A.D. Warring kings rule over the British Isles, but the Church rules over the kings, threatening all who oppose them with damnation. Only the dreaded Vikings of Scandinavia do not fear the priests.Shef, the bastard son of a Norse raider and a captive English lady, is torn by divided loyalties and driven by strange visions that seem to come from Odin himself. In the vastness of space, the crimes just get bigger and Slippery Jim diGriz, the Stainless Steel Rat, is the biggest criminal of them all. He can con humans, aliens and any number of robots time after time. Jim is so slippery that all the inter-galactic cops can do is make him one of their own
Someone was tampering with time, altering the past to eliminate the present, fading people out of existence into a timeless limbo. One of the victims was Angelina, the lovely, lethal wife of James Bolivar diGriz - better known as the Stainless Steel Rat. That put Slippery Jim on the trail of the villains, a trail that went back to 1984 and an ancient nation called the United States of America. The Stainless Steel Rat was determined to rescue his wife. And before he was through he'd thrown dozens of centuries of time in both directions. But then he didn't have much choice: to save Angenlina he had to save the world. Again.
The wild, galaxy-hopping adventures of brash young scientists Jerry Courtenay and Chuck van Chider are at the core of this classic space opera. When the two college students develop a faster-than-light space drive in their homemade workshed, they decide to sneak it aboard their football team's airplane as a prank. The boyish plan backfires, however, and the boys find themselves, along with their crush Sally and the seemingly loveable school caretaker, Old John, hurtling through the solar system towards Titan—an icy moon of Saturn inhabited by hideous ice creatures. Titan and the 20th century are only square one as the foursome becomes embroiled in a vast, intergalactic, century-jumping battle.

An Anthology on the Themes of Sacrifice and Redemption

Four major science fiction writers stretch their creative muscles on the theme of 'Sacrifice' and 'Redemption' and produce one of the most fascinating, startling and readable SF anthologies ever published. Brian Aldiss studies the implications of an extended lifespan - a blessing or a curse? In Poul Anderson's High Treason a space fleet commander commits treason to avoid war with another race and his Dipteroid studies the moral dilemma posed by a race for whom cannibalism is a biological necessity. James Blish asks the question: what happens when an irresponsible dropout gains control of the ultimate weapon? Harry Harrison rounds off the anthology with an SF variation on the castaway theme and a disturbing vision of the future where organ transplants are part of everyday life.
New Statesman, 13th February 1970, p.226. Review by Jonathan Raban. "...a tricky piece of soc sci fi from the anthropology department...it's written in the stiff journeyman prose that characterises too much of the science fiction I've encountered; an engaging drama of ideas without sufficient verbal solidity to make it a good novel."

This time the Special Corps has given the Rat a daring assignment: liberate a backward tourist planet from the clutches of an aging dictator. With his lovely but lethal wife Angelina and his two stalwart sons, James and Bolivar, diGriz pits ballots against bullets in the fight for freedom. He's vowed to restore truth, justice, and democracy to the world of Paraiso-Aqui, if he has to lie, cheat, and steal to do it.

Jim was left in the custody of the League Navy, this story opens with him escaping from his prison cell on the League base on Steren-Gwandra, where he is awaiting deportation back to his home world. He has discovered that Bibs, a crew girl from Captain Garth's ship, is also a prisoner. Jim holds Garth responsible for the Bishop's death, and plans to hunt him down, with Bibs' help. Garth is really the crazed Captain Zennor, head of an army which continually defies League peace treaties, and now plans to invade and conquer the planet Chojecki. The people of Chojecki are pacifists, having no armies and no police. But Garth's generals decide to attack anyway, since there are no medals for "generals who bring back the troops intact." Jim must save the people of Chojecki before he can face Garth.

The planet's population has exploded. The 35 million inhabitants of New York City run their TVs off pedal power, riot for water, trample for lentil 'steaks', and sweat beneath a sweltering sun. Amid it all, a city cop tries to catch a gangster's killer and vie for the affection of a dangerous woman... Offering a disturbing vision of the future and a groundbreaking exploration of the dangers of overpopulation, Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room! is a keystone work of science fiction -- and the basis of the cult film Soylent Green.

Ebery bit as stunning as West of Eden, Winter in Eden continues the incredible story of an alternate world much like the Paleolithic Stone Age. A monumental epic of passion, courage and triumph, it is supported by national radio and print advertising.
Homeworld is heaven on earth if you don't ask questions... Homeworld is stable at last, hundreds of years after the collapse of the 20th Century economy. For the millions of proles, life is still a grim ordeal, but for the lucky few, like Engineer Jan Kulozik, there is every kind of luxury. Except one. On Homeworld, where everything and everyone is monitored by the faceless power of the government, there is no freedom. Jan Kulozik knew nothing of the Resistance; he probably didn't want to. But suddenly, he is part of it. And running for his life...
On November 8, 1861, a U.S. navy warship stopped a British packet and seized two Confederate emissaries on their way to England to seek backing for their cause. England responded with rage, calling for a war of vengeance. The looming crisis was defused by the peace-minded Prince Albert. But imagine how Albert's absence during this critical moment might have changed everything. For lacking Albert's calm voice of reason, Britain now seizes the opportunity to attack and conquer a crippled, war-torn America.Ulysses S. Grant is poised for an attack that could smash open the South's defenses. In Washington, Abraham Lincoln sees a first glimmer of hope that this bloody war might soon end. But then disaster strikes: English troops have invaded from Canada. With most of the Northern troops withdrawn to fight the new enemy, General William Tecumseh Sherman and his weakened army stand alone against the Confederates. Can a divided, bloodied America defeat England, or will the United States cease to exist for all time?
Machines that murder... Landing on a new planet is a danger every time, and Selm-II is no exception. The specialists didn't like it. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of crumpled and gigantic weapons of war, a graveyard of destruction stretching almost to the lifeless horizon. But the war wasn't over...and they weren't all wrecks! It's an emergency. It's a job for Brion Brand, the mightiest weighlifter in the galaxy. With the brilliant, sensuous Dr. Lea Morees at his side he plunges into the war zone, into the steel jasm of teh PLANET OF NO RETURN!

The Bay City Rollers are a pop band from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, which experienced massive popularity during the mid 1970s. The British Hit Singles & Albums observed that they were "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh, the first of many acts heralded as the 'biggest group since the Beatles' and one of the most screamed-at teeny-bopper acts of the 1970s". For a brief, but intense period of "Rollermania", they were worldwide teen idols. The Bay City Rollers sold 120 million records. The band's membership changed many times over the years, but the classic line-up during its heyday included guitarists Eric Faulkner and Stuart John "Woody" Wood, singer Les McKeown, bassist Alan Longmuir, and drummer Derek Longmuir. By 2018 the group comprised guitarist Stuart John Wood (Woody), singer Ian Thomson, bassist Marcus Cordock, keyboardist Gary O'Hagan and drummer Jamie McGrory.

Harrisonovo krajně věrohodné líčení alternativní první světové války, války s ocelovými loděmi, automatickými zbraněmi a zákopy, je mrazivě vzrušující a nesmírně čtivé.
Od největších hrdinů po nejhorší padouchy… Bible, jak jste ji ještě nečetli! Hrdinové biblických příběhů nebyli dokonalí, ale rozhodně nebyli nudní. Některým dala víra sílu pomáhat lidem a postavit se zlu. Jiní naopak podlehli temné síle. Něco ale stále chybělo… Hlavní hrdina. A Jeho největší bitva. Mezinárodně uznávaní umělci Siku (Soudce Dredd, Manga Bible) a Jeff Anderson (Transformers, kreslená Bible) svými typickými ilustracemi oživují slavné biblické příběhy.
