Tyrrell čtivě mapuje skladatelův život a tvorbu až do jeho šedesátých narozenin, tedy do roku 1914. Detailně se věnuje Janáčkovu soukromému životu, jeho studiu, kariéře učitele, klavíristy a sbormistra a sleduje také jeho kulturní snahy v převážně německém Brně. Zabývá se Janáčkovými skladatelskými počátky a jeho kompozičním vývojem a také podrobnou genezí řady jeho děl.
