Karen Wynn Fonstad était une auteure de nombreux atlas de mondes fictifs. Elle a développé son travail axé sur la cartographie après avoir obtenu sa maîtrise en géographie de l'Université d'Oklahoma. Avant de se consacrer à l'écriture de ses cartes du monde détaillées, elle a été directrice des services cartographiques à l'Université du Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Ses créations sont appréciées pour leur précision et leur profondeur dans la représentation de paysages imaginaires.
