Roku 1990 se poprvé v naší literární historii objevil měsíčník věnovaný sci-fi, fantasy a hororu – Ikarie. Časopis, jehož vznik přecházelo mnohaleté úsilí celé řady našich více i méně známých spisovatelů a publicistů. V rámci sílícího československého sci-fi hnutí se zakládaly první kluby přátel sci-fi, pořádaly akce pro fany a první literární soutěže. Začaly se vydávat i mnohé samizdatové časopisy a sborníky. Ale teprve v roce 1990 konečně prosadil a naplno rozjel ve vydavatelství Mladá fronta jeho první šéfredaktor Ondřej Neff. Nazval ji na počest významného fanzinu Ikarie XB (1, 2, 3), pojmenovaného zase podle vynikajícího českého fantastického filmu Jindřicha Poláka Ikarie XB-1, natočeného v roce 1963.
