When a crow with the gift of the Old High Tongue flies into the isolated settlement of Ogley On Dunnett, he strikes up a friendship with farm boy, Avebury Durndle, who shares this gift. But the appearance of a huge and menacing troll in the vicinity creates fear and panic, prompting Crow, Avebury, Ovis Longstride and Ephraim Marley to journey to the mountains of the Snowlands, in order to seek help from the wizard, Grayfalard. As Ogley On Dunnett is attacked by brigands, the fates of Crow, the Durndle family and the troll are bound together in a battle to save the village. But will things ever be the same again?

This is the story of a snail who was dissatisfied with life because he was very slow and other animals, reptiles and insects were always racing past and leaving him behind. So he goes on a journey to get advice on how he can learn to move faster. But he comes home again having learned that it is best not to try to be what you are not and instead to make the best of what you are.
