Christopher Long Livres

Architect, designer, and theorist Josef Frank (1885-1967) was a prominent modernist in 1920s Europe, yet his contributions have often been overlooked in the history of modernism. This study comprehensively examines his life, ideas, and designs. Educated in Vienna, Frank emerged as a leading figure among Austria's younger architects post-World War I. However, he faced criticism for opposing the rigid standards of modern architecture in the early 1930s. Advocating for pluralism over uniformity, he championed a humane modernism that addressed everyday needs and embraced sentimentality and historical influences. In 1933, after leaving Vienna for Sweden, Frank's work significantly shaped Swedish modern design. As chief designer for the Stockholm firm Svenskt Tenn for over thirty years, he created colorful, cozy, and eclectic pieces that stood in stark contrast to the architectural mainstream and foreshadowed the 1960s revolt against modernism. This sensitive study by Christopher Long sheds new light on Frank's contributions and offers valuable insights into modernist culture and its evolution.

In early September 1928, Viennese police arrested the famed architect Adolf Loos. The charge was child molestation. Two young girls (and eventually a third), ages eight to ten, alleged that Loos had touched them inappropriately and compelled them to commit indecent acts while he was drawing nudes of them. What followed was a very public affair that culminated in a sensational trial, pitting Loos and his supporters against his many detractors. But the controversy was about more than Loos' guilt: like almost everything in Austria in the late 1920s, those involved saw the events through powerful political and cultural lenses. The arrest and subsequent trial not only set the forces of the right against those of the left, but also the city's avant-gardists against their conservative critics. This volume documents the controversy.
