Kniha Obřady chaosu, ke které má nyní ve zkrácené formě přístup český čtenář, je výběrem textů o konzumní společnosti a showbyznysu v Mexiku. Monsiváis je neoblomně věrný kulturní jinakosti neoficiálního Mexika a vytrvale zaznamenává jeho nejneobyčejnější projevy. Příznačný je tentokrát absolutní rozpad státu jako tvůrce kulturního odkazu, ať je přijatelný, či nikoliv. K výbuchu nyní dochází vlastním impulzem a má svou vlastní logiku.
