Kromě známějších raných povídek, jako jsou Večer u carevny, Hapa Hužvová, Dantova ulice, Můj první honorář a jeho varianta Osobní list, obsahuje výbor i Babelovu vůbec nejstarší známou krátkou prózu Starý Šlojme, napsanou v roce 1913, kdy bylo jejímu autorovi pouhých 19 let. Svazek uzavírají u Babela ojedinělé povídky na cizí námět: Na poli cti, Dezertér, Rodina otce Marescota, Kvaker a Doudou, a spisovatelovy vzpomínky a fejetony - mezi nimi Oděsa o městě lidí žijících ze vzduchu, městě, kde jsou především čistě materiální podmínky k tomu, aby se tu dal vychovat - například - maupassantovský talent…

Povídky Isaaka Babela znamenající novou etapu ve vývoji povídky jako žánru. Z hrstky slov autor buduje epickou, složitou stavbu s dokonale rozlišenými typy, s neopakovatelnou situací a atmosférou, ve zkratkovitosti jde až na nejzazší mez, hovorovou ruštinu mísí s vysokým literárním jazykem, obrazy vyhrazené dřív jen lyrice s nejvulgárnějšími nadávkami – a celé toto stylistické úsilí směřuje k jedinému cíli: k svrchovanému zvládnutí látky. Samoúčelnost a schválnost v jeho díle není. Přeložil Jan Zábrana.

V knize jsou pouze dvě kratší povídky, „Bylo jich devět“ a „Ivan a Marja“. Většina výtisku je věnována dopisům, které napsal I. Babel.

Isaak Babel is met Tsjechov de belangrijkste Russische schrijver van korte verhalen. Hij verwierf zich wereldfaam met Rode Ruiterij , dat de weerslag van zijn oorlogservaringen bevat. Niet minder vermaard zijn de prachtige Verhalen uit Odessa , die hij in de jaren 1923/24 schreef. De thematiek behelst het joodse bandietendom uit de wijk in Odessa waar Babel geboren is en waar hij, om stof op te doen, een tijd bij een tipgever woonde tot deze vermoord werd. De beide vertellers spreken soms ironisch, maar meestal met bewondering over de figuur van de legendarische gangster Benja Krik, bijgenaamd ‘De Koning’. Het tweede deel van deze bundel wordt gevormd door Babels latere, na 1923 geschreven verhalen, die gewoonlijk als zijn ‘autobiografische verhalen’ worden aangeduid. Ze zijn wat beschouwender van aard, maar ook hier ontkomt de lezer niet aan de indruk dat het brute geweld en de zinloze wreedheid van de mensen Babel hebben gebiologeerd als een geheim dat moest worden ontraadseld. Daartoe moest het eerst worden uitgebeeld, en dat heeft Babel op onnavolgbare wijze gedaan.
