Autoři obsáhle pojednávají o válečných konfliktech starověkého Izraele. Své závěry opírají o výsledky současného archeologického a historiografického bádání a o moderní trendy biblické kritiky. Oba autoři prožili mnoho let vojenské služby na místech, o nichž Bible vypráví.

Dílo známého izraelského autora je podrobným popisem boje izraelské armády v nelítostné válce, která vypukla v den zahájení svátku Jom Kippur, v říjnu 1973. Arabským zemím se podařilo vybudovat moderní ozbrojené síly, jejichž nečekané nasazení Izrael téměř dokonale překvapilo. Izrael je již opět nucen bojovat o svoji holou existenci, a jako obvykle, proti drtivé převaze nepřítele. Kniha nabízí strhující vyprávění doplňované řadou komentářů a vzpomínek očitých svědků a účastníků bojů, je nabita napětím a příběhy inspirujícího hrdinství. Mimořádnou událostí je i předmluva, kterou k tomuto vydání napsal brigádní generál Michael Herzog, autorův syn, aktivní účastník bojů.

Herzog je autorem nad jiné povolaným, neboť byl od konce čtyřicátých let minulého století přímým účastníkem řady konfl iktů mezi židovským státem a jeho arabskými sousedy. Bojoval ve válce za nezávislost a po jejím skončení se stal součástí týmu, který vybudoval Izraelské obranné síly jako pravidelnou armádu. Do výslužby odešel v hodnosti generálmajora. Za šestidenní války v roce 1967 se stal světově uznávaným vojenským komentátorem, přinášejícím pravdivý obraz vývoje situace na bojišti. V polovině sedmdesátých let působil jako izraelský zástupce v OSN. Vrcholu kariéry dosáhl, když byl zvolen šestým prezidentem Státu Izrael. V této funkci byl svědkem okamžiků vrcholných nadějí i momentů zmaru v historii blízkovýchodního konfliktu. Po Herzogově skonu v roce 1997 se nového vydání ujal jeho přítel a kolega, generál Shlomo Gazit, jenž knihu s nemenší erudicí doplnil o kapitoly zachycující vývoj událostí od počátku osmdesátých let až do roku 2003.
