Die rationalistische Aufklärung betrachtete Alchemie als primitive Vorstufe der Chemie, die unwissenschaftlich versuchte, Metalle in Gold zu verwandeln. Diese Sichtweise blieb weit verbreitet, obwohl wahre Meister der Alchemie betonten, dass das „große Werk“ der Transformation innerlich ist und die metallurgische Sprache symbolisch für die Läuterung des menschlichen Wesens steht.
