This beautiful book focuses on the distinctive and expressive power of Jackson Pollock's figurative paintings, drawings, and prints; a rarely studied aspect of his artistic career. Jackson Pollock's name has become synonymous with the abstract drip paintings that he famously created on the floor of his studio. Before these paintings, from the 1930s to the late 1940s, Pollock created figurative works, studying at one time under the painter Thomas Hart Benton and with the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Pollock took up figuration again after his famous drip paintings. This book starts with the early decades and also treats Pollock's re-adoption of the figuration after his renowned abstract paintings. The Figurative Pollock features 100 paintings and works on paper. From rolling landscapes to experiments in non-Western totemic painting to sketches and drawings fueled by Jungian analysis, the enormous range of Pollock's early and late work is presented here. Brimming with confidence and a sense of freedom, distinct yet so easily related to Pollock's most famous oeuvre, these works contribute to an understanding of how the artist found his voice.

Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) patří mezi zakládající osobnosti světového umění. Jeho dílo spojované s „newyorskou“ uměleckou školou řadíme k abstraktnímu expresionismu. Pollock zcela změnil historii umění tím, že „veřejnosti vylil kbelík barvy do tváře“. Objevil akční malbu i malířský požitek vnitřní dynamiky samotného aktu malování, hutnosti barvy, sílu rychlosti i dopadu barvy na plátno. Svá díla pak maloval každou buňkou v těle, vynakládal tak úžasnou duchovní i fyzickou energii. Pollockovy radikální prvky malování, jako například úplné odmítnutí palety a chybějící tradiční perspektiva, staví jeho dílo do pozice důležitého mezníku ve světovém poválečném umění... Vinou způsobu svého života nezanechal žádnou ucelenou edici svých textů. Náš výbor se opírá o několik jeho vlastních textů, rozhovor s Williamem Wrightem, rozhovory s Lee Krasnerovou, vzpomínky Alexe Horna a Donalda Judda a pro pochopení kontextu i o rozhovor s jeho galeristkou Betty Parsonsovou. Sie beleuchtet Werke von 27 bedeutenden Künstlern, darunter Jackson Pollock, und bietet fachliche Beiträge sowie Einführungen zu den Künstlern.

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) ist der amerikanische Abstrakte Expressionist. Mit seiner Technik des Drippings, die er ab 1943 in seiner Malerei anwandte, hat er eine eigenständige Malsprache entwickelt, die der amerikanischen Nachkriegskunst neue Wege aufzeigte. Der Band präsentiert das weniger bekannte zeichnerische Werk des Amerikaners und verdeutlicht dessen Stellenwert auf dem Weg von der traditionellen, figurativen Linie zum abstrakten, grafischen Ausdruck in Pollocks Gesamtwerk. Durch die retrospektive Auswahl der Papierarbeiten werden die wichtigsten Schaffensphasen des Künstlers beleuchtet: Beginnend mit Blättern aus frühen Skizzenbüchern, Studien nach Gemälden alter Meister oder mexikanischer Muralisten des 20. Jahrhunderts, bilden seine Zeichnungen aus den Jahren 1940 bis 1950 den Schwerpunkt. Sie dokumentieren Pollocks zeichnerische Entwicklung, die von seiner Orientierung an surrealistischer Motivik und Technik bis hin zur abstrakten Komposition der späteren Jahre reicht.
