The presented text offers a basic overview of the terms and topics of the very wide philosophical discipline called metaphysics. The text includes, besides an overview of individual problems, reflections to consider and recommended literature. Readers will become familiar with the basic terms (metaphysics, ontology, existence, being), with the metaphysics of archaic nations, Parmenides’s approach to understand being as The One, the understanding of time and events of the Greeks, the problem of categories according to Aristotle and Kant, the problem of intuition and fundamental ontology.

The first part of this textbook introduces philosophy to the reader as a part of culture, in addition to science, religion, art. It outlines various disciplines of philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, philosophy of mind etc. The second part maps the understanding of history, or the philosophical reflection of history in the history of philosophy.

Bergsonov vplyv na kultúru najmä v prvej tretine 20. storocia bol rozsiahly. Nadchol literárnych modernistov, odvolávali sa nan talianski futuristi, surrealisti, pragmatisti, kriticky sa s ním vyrovnával Einstein a súdobá fyzika, rovnako neskorší fenomenológovia Merleau–Ponty, P. Ricoeur, postštrukturalista J. Deleuze a mnohí další. A i napriek tomu, že nevznikla žiadna filozofická škola, ktorá by niesla jeho meno, Bergsonove myslenie je citelne prítomné v prácach W. Jamesa, G. Santayana, A. N. Whiteheada, alebo japonského filozofa Nishida Kitaro. Velký vplyv zanechal na tvorbu belgického básnika Van Lerbergha a francúzskeho spisovatela M. Prousta. Niektoré jeho myšlienky s narastajúcimi výsledkami zastarali (najmä skúmania evolúcie), väcšina však zostala aktuálna pre dnešných filozofov náboženstva, antropológie, fenomenológov, estetikov. Bez prítomnosti Bergsonových originálnych myšlienok by mala filozofia života celkom inú tvár a vyvíjala by sa pravdepodobne iba smerom k hermeneutike a historizmu. Vdaka Bergsonovi mala zastúpenie i na poli evolucionizmu.
