Le héros du roman de García Márquez est la figure légendaire de Simon Bolívar, un acteur clé du mouvement latino-américain pour l'indépendance. Politicien et général, il devient président de la Colombie en 1819 et de Pérou en 1821. L'auteur dépeint les derniers mois de sa vie, sa dernière traversée sur le fleuve Magdalena et sa mort dans la solitude à la finca de San Pedro Alejandrino, près de la côte caribéenne. Plutôt que de se concentrer sur ses succès ou échecs militaires et politiques, García Márquez explore l'histoire d'un homme réalisant avec étonnement que sa vie lui échappe, qu'il se retrouve seul face à l'histoire. L'œuvre abandonne le récit exclusivement "magique" pour s'orienter davantage vers la factualité, bien que les faits historiques soient traités de manière libre. On retrouve la thématique de la solitude, ainsi que le motif du labyrinthe du monde. Bolívar apparaît presque comme un personnage de Macondo, ou comme un alter ego de l'auteur au XXe siècle.

Qui, tre narratori-testimoni (un ragazzo, sua madre, suo nonno) sono le voci monologanti attraverso le quali è possibile ricostruire, dai diversi punti di vista generazionali, la storia di un suicida. Scritto sotto l’influenza della narrativa di Faulkner (il gioco delle voci e dei livelli temporali diversi oltre al senso incombente della morte), il romanzo trova il valore unitario nell’alone di mistero e di sospensione che sovrasta la figura del medico suicida e che dilatandosi oltre i confini della vicenda stessa assurge a costante dell’invenzione narrativa di Márquez.

Jedním z nich byl i filmový režisér Miguel Littín, kterýšťastnou náhodou unikl smrti. A své jméno našel na seznamu 5000 Chilanů, kteří se neměli nikdy vrátit. Přesto se roku 1985 rozhodl zemi nejen ilegálně navštívit, ale natočit o Pinochetově diktatuře film. Režisér změnil vlastní totožnost – kromě fyzické podoby i držení těla a přízvuk, v rámci příprav žil s fiktivní manželkou, budoucí spolupracovnicí, v Paříži. Jako „uruguayský obchodník“ přiletěl do země a navázal kontakt se třemi evropskými filmařskými týmy, které měly oficiálně točit mj. o seismické činnosti. Natáčel po celé zemi a materiál ihned odesílal do bezpečí. Po šesti týdnech, kdy se informace o jeho pobytu objevila v novinách, opustil Littín za dramatických okolností Chile podruhé...

Miguel Littín est chilien et metteur en scène de cinéma. Il fait partie des 5 000 Chiliens qui sont interdits de séjour dans leur pays. Au début de l'année 1985, pourtant, Miguel Littín est rentré clandestinement au Chili. Pendant six semaines, grâce à la résistance intérieure, il a réussi à diriger trois équipes de nationalités différentes pour filmer clandestinement, jusque dans le palais présidentiel, la réalité du pays sous la dictature militaire.
