The narrative begins with Jonathan Harker, a newly qualified solicitor, visiting Count Dracula in Transylvania to assist with a real estate transaction for his employer, Mr. Peter Hawkins. Initially charmed by Dracula, Harker soon discovers he is a prisoner in the Count's castle. While exploring against Dracula's warnings, he encounters three female vampires but is rescued by Dracula, who then abandons Harker to them. Harker narrowly escapes the castle. Dracula boards the Russian ship Demeter, carrying boxes of Transylvanian soil essential for his strength. The ship runs aground in Whitby, England, where the captain's log reveals the crew's mysterious disappearance, leaving him bound to the helm. An animal resembling a large dog is seen ashore. It is later revealed that Dracula, under the alias 'Count De Ville,' has purchased multiple estates in London, distributing the boxes of soil to secure his lairs. As the story progresses, Dracula begins to stalk Lucy Westenra, who is vacationing in Whitby. Lucy experiences sleepwalking and mental deterioration, noted by her friend Mina Murray
