Many years ago there lived an Emperor who was so terribly fond of beautiful new clothes that he spent all his money on dressing elegantly... Jewels in storytelling, these magical fairytales by Hans Christian Andersen were inspired by his own life as an outsider. From 'The Little Mermaid' to 'The Red Shoes', his fables show the ugliest of humanity - its power, greed, vanity - but also how suffering can lead to beauty.

A mermaid falls in love with a prince from the land of men, but what is the price she has to pay to be able to walk by his side?

The tale is about a fir tree so anxious to grow up, so anxious for greater things, that he cannot appreciate living in the moment. The tale was first published 21 December 1844 with "The Snow Queen" in Copenhagen, Denmark by C.A. Reitzel. One scholar indicates that "The Fir-Tree" was the first of Andersen's fairy tales to express a deep pessimism.

Jack and the Beanstalk; The Princess and the Pea - Two Favorite Tales in One Book
(Jack and the beanstalk/The Princess and the Pea)
For over one hundred years The Ugly Duckling has been a childhood favorite, and Jerry Pinkney's spectacular new adaptation brings it triumphantly to new generations of readers. With keen emotion and fresh vision, the acclaimed artist captures the essence of the tale's timeless appeal: The journey of the awkward little bird -- marching bravely through hecklers, hunters, and cruel seasons -- is an unforgettable survival story; this blooming into a graceful swan is a reminder of the patience often necessary to discover true happiness. Splendid watercolors set in the lush countryside bring drama to life.
A charmingly-illustrated take on a classic tale, perfect for young readers. When a young prince decides to marry, his mother insists they search the land far and wide to find a real princess—but the perfect bride is hard to find. Caldecott honoree Janet Stevens' expressive animal illustrations bring humor and fun to this traditional story, from the dancing elephant princess to the rain-soaked tiger princess climbing her pile of fluffy featherbeds. This accessible, easy-to-read adaptation is a classic itself, perfect to share with young readers who will love the intricate outfits and cheery wild creatures prancing across the pages.
