Er ist durch Afrika, den Mittleren Osten, Bangladesch und Russland gereist und hat längere Zeit in Qatar, Teheran und Moskau verbracht. In Dhaka hat er eine pharmazeutische Fabrik aufgebaut, in Moskau ein Satelliten-Kommunikationsnetz errichtet und in Grossbritannien ein Hotel designt. Inzwischen konzentriert er sich ausschliesslich aufs Schreiben und lebt mit seiner Frau Nelli und ihren zwei gemeinsamen Kindern in der Nähe von Derby, England.
