Le héros du roman de García Márquez est la figure légendaire de Simon Bolívar, un acteur clé du mouvement latino-américain pour l'indépendance. Politicien et général, il devient président de la Colombie en 1819 et de Pérou en 1821. L'auteur dépeint les derniers mois de sa vie, sa dernière traversée sur le fleuve Magdalena et sa mort dans la solitude à la finca de San Pedro Alejandrino, près de la côte caribéenne.
