Jakub Grimm (1785-1863) i jego brat Wilhelm (1786-1859), niemieccy filolodzy, zaczęli publikować swoje baśnie w latach 1812-1815. Pełne wydanie, znane jako „Kinder- und Hausmärchen”, ukazało się w 1857 roku i zostało wpisane na Światową Listę Dziedzictwa Kulturowego UNESCO w 2005 roku. Przetłumaczone na ponad 160 języków, jest jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych dzieł niemieckiej kultury, obok Biblii Lutra. Niniejsza dwutomowa edycja opiera się na kanonicznym zbiorze z 1857 roku, a jej tłumaczeniem oraz posłowiem zajęła się Eliza Pieciul-Karmińska. Dzięki jej pracy, baśnie te zostały uwolnione od dydaktyzmu i patyny czasu, oferując nową jakość.
