Joanna Cole était une auteure de livres pour enfants et une enseignante de sciences. Elle est surtout connue comme l'auteure de la série de livres pour enfants The Magic School Bus. Son œuvre comprend plus de 250 livres, de son premier livre Cockroach à la célèbre série Magic School Bus. Cole est née à Newark, New Jersey, et a grandi à East Orange, dans le New Jersey. Enfant, elle aimait la science et avait une enseignante qui lui rappelait Mme Frizzle. Elle est diplômée du City College de New York avec un baccalauréat en psychologie. Après des cours de troisième cycle, elle a travaillé un an comme bibliothécaire dans une école primaire de Brooklyn.
