Un soir, en rentrant de l'opéra, Mr et Mme Ransome, incarnation d’une bourgeoisie britannique pétrie de convenances, retrouvent leur appartement cambriolé, ou plutôt vidé. Tout a disparu, jusqu'aux plinthes et au papier toilette. Monsieur cherche les coupables, Madame, d'abord effondrée, se rêve peu à peu une nouvelle vie. Le fragile voile des conventions se déchire. Il va falloir trouver du linge, des meubles et affronter le monde extérieur, ce grand inconnu peuplé d'individus aux manières extravagantes, épicier pakistanais, grossier inspecteur de police, ménagère abrutie de télévision…. Alan Bennet, l’auteur de La reine des lectrices, nous offre une satire réjouissante, égratignant sans vergogne le snobisme d’un couple anglais et ses petits compromis.

Clive Dunlop was a masseur of exceptional talents. His 'services' were much in demand amongst the great and the good and after his untimely death at the age of 34 they - the film stars and politicians, the writers and publishers, the TV pundits and celebrity chefs - are gathered for his memorial service. The conduct of the service is a great worry for the priest taking the service but it proves to be a test for the congregation. This is Alan Bennett at his absolute best with an exceptional satire. It is a perfect work of fiction but it will give readers the extra frisson of pleasure of identifying many of the characters, including even the masseur. This is a small masterpiece.

Ein anonymer Liebesbrief bringt die wohlgeordnete Welt der attraktiven Helen McFarquhar aus dem Gleichgewicht: ob geschrieben vom »Jungen in Flammen« oder nur ein belangloser Scherz, der Brief verstrickt die kühle Verführerin in Leidenschaften, die in ihrem Leben eigentlich gar keinen Platz mehr haben. Ein unbeschwerter, sommerlicher Wandel auf dem Pfad der Selbsterkenntnis, wenn man sich Helen McFarquhar verwandt fühlt.
