Niels Henrik Abel fut un mathématicien norvégien dont les travaux pionniers en algèbre et en théorie des fonctions ont radicalement transformé le domaine. Il est surtout célèbre pour sa preuve définitive démontrant l'impossibilité de résoudre l'équation générale du cinquième degré par radicaux, un problème resté insoluble pendant 250 ans. Abel a également développé indépendamment la théorie des groupes, un pilier des mathématiques et de la physique modernes, et a apporté des contributions profondes à la théorie des fonctions elliptiques et abéliennes. Bien que largement méconnu de son vivant, son héritage intellectuel continue d'inspirer et de défier les mathématiciens des siècles plus tard.
