As a teenager in the 1950s, Caroline Waterman travelled to Spain to teach English in a small cathedral town buried in a remote corner of Castile. There she discovered a bizarre world, relic of a bygone age, where women were suppressed, monks ploughed with oxen, and the only toilet facility for many was a corner of a cow shed.
