Wilfrid Scawen Blunt was a British diplomat and poet, who fought the case for Egyptian and Irish nationalism. A great admirer of Islam, the author's classic text from the 1880s predicts many of the divisions that affect the world, and speaks of what must happen if the world is to ever be a peaceful one.
Carl Linnaeus' Systema Naturae (1735) brought order to all recorded knowledge about plants and animals. He invented the system of giving living organisms two Latin names. Here is a lively account of Linnaeus the man-from poor student to professor of medicine and founder of the Royal Academy of Sciences-as well as his landmark scientific achievements, such as naming 9,000 plants, 828 shells, 2,100 insects and 477 fish.
Ludwig II (Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm, Louis II in English) (8/25/1845-6/13/1886) was Bavarian king from 1864 until just before his death. He's sometimes called the Swan King or the Märchenkönig (Ger. Fairytale King). He's also called the Mad King, tho the label's truth is disputed. Because he was deposed on grounds of mental illness without medical examination & died mysteriously a day later, questions abide. He's best known as an eccentric whose legacy is intertwined with the history of art & architecture, as he commissioned construction of several extravagant castles & was a major patron of Richard Wagner.
