Jak to w Nowym Jorku, są tu i narkotyki, i zagadkowe morderstwo, i porwanie, i tajemniczy kolekcjoner… Tajemniczość otacza zresztą wszystkich bohaterów i obecna jest na kartach całej książki. W pełną napięcia i niespodziewanych zwrotów akcję autorka wplata niezwykle umiejętnie i dyskretnie przekaz wartości, które w dzisiejszym świecie są coraz mniej popularne i coraz bardziej zapomniane i niemodne. Lektura książki zmusza do refleksji, iż pewne wartości nie mogą przestać obowiązywać nawet w rozpędzonym i zapatrzonym w siebie świecie dwudziestego pierwszego wieku, bo wtedy człowiek zaczyna pogrążać się w chaosie i ostatecznie gubi samego siebie. Nowy Jork z powieści Reginy Doman staje się dla czytelnika zadziwiająco bliskim i znajomym obrazem świata, w którym on sam żyje. Nie sposób nie polubić i nie zżyć się z sympatycznymi bohaterami pierwszej części trylogii. Pocieszające jest to, że nie trzeba się z nimi rozstawać wraz z zamknięciem książki, bo w przygotowaniu są dwie kolejne książki opowiadające o ich dalszych losach – jeszcze bardziej zawiłych, niespodziewanych, niebezpiecznych i niezwykłych. Dodatkową atrakcją pisarstwa Reginy Doman jest fakt, że czerpie ona inspirację z baśni braci Grimm. Książka Cień Niedźwiedzia oparta jest na motywach mało znanej baśni Białośnieżka i Różyczka. Znajomość baśni nie jest jednak konieczna do właściwego odbioru książki. Żyje ona bowiem własnym życiem i nie ma w niej prostych i bezpośrednich analogii do baśniowych wydarzeń i postaci. Niemniej znajomość baśni może dostarczyć czytelnikowi dodatkowej przyjemności, bowiem do emocji, jakie zapewnia sama lektura książki, dochodzą jeszcze te, które wynikają z szukania punktów wspólnych oraz bliższych i dalszych odniesień. W 2005 roku ukazała się płyta ze słuchowiskiem na podstawie powieści Cień Niedźwiedzia, które w 2009 roku otrzymało prestiżową nagrodę Sonic Society (kanadyjskiego stowarzyszenia zajmującego się promocją słuchowisk) dla najlepszego słuchowiska. Na podstawie książki powstaje również film, którego premiera zapowiadana jest na czerwiec 2011 roku.
