Die Frage, ob Kinder, die unter dem Syndrom der Eltern-Entfremdung (Parental Alienation Syndrome – PAS) leiden, auf Anordnung des Gerichtes beim entfremdeten Elternteil wohnen bzw. diesen besuchen sollten, ist ein wesentlicher Streitpunkt unter Juristen und Fachleuten für psychische Gesundheit. Die vorliegende Verlaufsstudie des amerikanischen Kinderpsychiaters Prof. Dr. R. A. Gardner beschreibt 99 PAS-Fälle bei denen der Autor unmittelbar involviert war. In diesem Zusammenhang kam er zu dem Schluss, dass das Gericht den Umgang mit dem entfremdeten Elternteil oder den Hauptwohnsitz des Kindes anordnen sollte. Die Ergebnisse in den Fällen, in denen diese Anordnungen durchgeführt wurden (22), werden mit den Fällen verglichen, in denen dieser Empfehlung nicht entsprochen wurde (77). Die Ergebnisse der Studie kö: nnen die interdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Fachdiskussion und Forschung zum Problembereich PAS im Rahmen von Trennung/Scheidung und die familiengerichtliche Praxis bei Sorgerechts- und Umgangsentscheidungen anregen und ergänzen.
