    Cet auteur chrétien primitif de Carthage est le premier à produire un vaste corpus de littérature chrétienne latine. Vénéré comme le "père du christianisme latin" et le fondateur de la théologie occidentale, il a fait progresser de nouveaux concepts théologiques malgré son approche conservatrice. Sa contribution la plus significative fut l'exposé formel de la théologie trinitaire, introduisant le terme latin "trinitas" et la phrase fondamentale "trois Personnes, une Substance". Bien qu'initialement considérées comme hérétiques, ses formulations théologiques furent ultérieurement adoptées comme orthodoxie chrétienne.
