Kniha se skládá ze čtyř žánrově velmi rozmanitých povídek. První z nich je dalším příspěvkem k druhu, k jehož označení by bylo možno použít názvu klasického díla H. G. Wellse „Válka světů“: Obyvatelé Země se s pomocí vesmírných lodí brání stále častějším případům napadení bytostmi odkudsi z vesmíru. (Podle této povídky byl natočen jeden díl proslulého seriálu Star Trek.) Nechte se překvapit náměty dalších tří povídek.

Kniha obsahuje opět čtyři povídky. O první z nich bychom mohli říci, že pochází z „pravěku“ žánru sci-fi (z roku 1939). Vypráví o zkonstruování inteligentního robota a o tvůrcově smrti způsobené nehodou, ale pokládané za vraždu spáchanou tímto robotem. Příběh vypráví sám robot, a jeví se v něm jako poněkud neohrabané dítě, obtížně se pohybující ve světě lidí, jejichž psychiku lze stěží pochopit. Děj druhé povídky se odehrává ve vzdálené budoucnosti. Pozemšťané již ovládli některé planety a vytvořili osady v kosmu, ale napadli je tvorové z prostoru mimo sluneční soustavu, kteří chtějí lidstvo zničit a Zemi osídlit sami. Příběh by bylo možno nazvat „komorním“ v poněkud zvláštním smyslu slova: dvěma hlavními postavami jsou vojenský kosmonaut a kosmonautka ve vězení mimozemšťanů, kde jeho počáteční soucit s ní se změní v lásku s tragickým koncem. A náměty dalších dvou povídek? Nechte se překvapit.
