Der österreichische Germanist und Literaturhistoriker Jakob Minor (1855-1912) untersucht Goethes Faust und erklärt dieses Werk aus dem Zusammenhang und der Situation heraus. Damit geht der Verfasser anders vor als viele Faustphilologen, die seiner Meinung nach zu sehr am Wortlaut festhalten und damit prägnanter sein wollen als der Dichter selbst. Minor sucht die Erklärung hingegen aus der Anschauung heraus und vermittelt diese in Form eines selbstständigen Kommentars. Im ersten Band werden der Urfaust und das Fragment behandelt. Unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe aus dem Jahr 1901.
